The method of the kill was not hinted in a way that I thought we were supposed to be able to figure out as we read it, so that was not worth puzzling over. An old favorite English manor house mystery, with a lovely set of red herring suspects and a delightfully satisfying solution.
Written inyou can imagine that it was a kinder, more genteel style of writing. The book definitely had the same humorous tone as the first book did though perhaps a touch less. This one, like the others, has lots of style and is easy and undemanding to read. View all 4 comments. She was a prolific author who wrote many a regency romance and detective stories. It didn’t take me that long to guess the murderer, although I couldn’t figure out how it was done Supposedly this is a Christmas book, but when all the characters except Uncle Joseph are just too, too sophisticated to do anything but sneer at the prospect of decorating a tree or putting up decorations, it loses whatever holiday atmosphere it might have had.
Then there is Nat’s business partner who enviouss him with the latest business proposal. Nathaniel, regarding him with a contemptuous eye, said that a real English Christmas meant, in his experience, a series of quarrels between inimical person bound to on another only by the accident of relationship, and thrown ccasca by a worn-out convention which decreed that at Christmas families should forgather.

On the whole, only Maud’s character was interesting ironically. And she was absolutely right. You can pick back up at the Bonus: Detection Unlimited Georgette Heyer. I have to admit I saw the murderer and the method coming, but only because I had seen a similar murder method used in a recent BBC mystery production – otherwise it was very clever.
Other books in this series. The book is a long one – pages, with the murder only appearing on page 73 – but the whole thing is mixed and balanced extremely well. Read 7 times, listened 1 time.
Hemingway is just fallible enough to be human, without distracting attention away from the detection. There is no shortage of people who could have murdered Nathaniel.
The detection begins on Christmas Eve, with the arrival of a local uniformed Inspector, and continues with the arrival of Inspector Hemingway from Scotland Yard. If so, where did he hide it? The investigation is complicated by the fact that every guest is hiding something-throwing all of their testimony into question and casting suspicion far and wide.
For Inspector Hemingway of Scotland Yard, ’tis the season to find whodunit. I did like Stephen against my better judgement.
A magnificent butler, though. I’m glad I decided to sneak it in my holiday reading list this year. Heyer’s main gift is depicting the barbed interactions between the prickly Herriards and their soapy Uncle Joe. I enjoyed this book, but it was hard going the first half-once I got past the interminable family squabbling, the sardonic grinning Stephen, and the quelling looks from butler Sturry is was very good.
